Shoppers got more than they bargained for yesterday when they went about their business in Bridgetown.
The usual weekend shopping trip had the added benefit of the Bridgetown Shopping Day, an initiative in which certain stores offered discounts on clothing, food and telecommunications. As if that were not enough, the Eclipse Street Theatre hosted a regional folk character parade through the capital.
Organiser Rashida Brereton said the idea was to reintroduce forgotten characters into society, such as the heartman and the steel donkey.
“The folk characters have come out to remind us they are [still] here and what they represent. Right now, people from the region have come out to participate in this, and it’s so beautiful to see the different cultures as they grace the streets.
We’re taking over the streets, and we’re reminding the community we are here and we need to stay,” she said. (CA)
