Member of Parliament for St Thomas Cynthia Forde is calling for a great effort to regulate the ZR sector.
Speaking recently on a resolution to acquire land for roundabout construction in St George, Forde lamented the disorderly behaviour, cursing, unkempt appearances, loud music and dirty lyrics associated with the ZR vans.
“This country is going down a terrible road,” she said. “Somebody has to control the ZR drivers,”
She said there was a need for flashing lights to be placed urgently in the vicinity of the Eunice Gibson Polyclinic at Warrens.
Forde said there was illegal parking by ZR vans blocking the pedestrian crossing at the polyclinic. She noted the use of the pedestrian crossing by elderly and disabled people.
“It is the most dangerous thing you can ever want,” the former Government minister with responsibility for elderly affairs, stated.
Forde called for town hall meetings and better synergy among Government agencies to address a range of concerns in St Thomas. Road works were needed to protect the safety of children and other pedestrians from ZR van drivers, she said.
The St Thomas MP said wells needed to be cleaned in what was described as a parish accustomed to frequent rainfall while one bridge was ready to collapse and there was a dire need for street lights.
“We hardly have any lights,” the veteran parliamentarian said.
She said plantation owners should be required to pay for elements of construction work.
Another concern of Forde’s was illegal dumping of stoves and matresses across the parish.
“It is shameful,” she said.
There was also inadequate signage for visitors to get to tourist attractions in the parish, she suggested.
