Former WI coach Pybus joins Afghanistan

Richard Pybus, the former West Indies head coach and director of cricket at CWI, has been appointed Afghanistan’s new head coach. He takes up the post following the team’s group stage exit at the ongoing T20 World Cup.

The Englishman takes over from Jonathan Trott, who was at the helm of the Afghanistan team for four years.

Pybus’ first assignment with Afghanistan will be presiding over the team’s white-ball series against Sri Lanka in the UAE. The first T20I is scheduled to be played in Sharjah on March 13.

He was director of cricket back in 2016 when the West Indies won the Men’s T20 World Cup, the Women’s T20 World Cup and the Men’s Under 19 World Cup.

As men’s head coach he was instrumental when they beat England and on win the Wisden Trophy back in 2019.
