Fraser Sisters, Gill, Broomes-Webster shine at Trevor Straughn Championship

The National Sports Council Trevor Straughn Primary Schools Cross Country Championships held on Thursday morning at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex generated lots of excitement with the Fraser sisters, Glory and Life-Star, taking the spotlight.

 

In the Class 4 Girls’ 2000m, Glory Fraser of the Reynold Weekes Primary in St Philip – the younger sister of former Barbados and CARIFTA Games gold medallist Mary Fraser – produced a dominant run to capture first place in a time of 7:50.3 seconds.

 

She was followed by Ciara Waithe of Hindsbury Primary, who clocked 8:13.4, while Roosalie O’Neal of West Terrace Primary finished third in 8:15.6. The consistent Cristiana Rock of St Stephen’s Primary placed fourth with 8:17.9, and Kimaria Allen-Farrell of Shirley Chisholm Primary rounded off the top five in 8:32.7.

 

The annual cross country event, dedicated to honouring the legacy of Trevor Straughn, continues to be one of the most anticipated fixtures on the primary schools’ athletics calendar.

 

The Class 4 Boys’ 2000m was a thrilling contest featuring several tightly bunched finishes. Naleek Gill of St Ambrose Primary stormed to victory in 6:56.2 seconds. He demonstrated exceptional endurance and pacing from start to finish.

 

Gill was closely followed by Trazahri Ifill of St Bernard’s Primary, who clocked 7:26.2, and Nathan Phillips of Blackman and Gollop Primary, who secured third in 7:35.0. Romario Beckles of St Gabriel’s School placed fourth in 7:36.5, and Blake Graham of Warrens Primary completed the top five with 7:37.1.

 

In the Class 2 Girls’ 1600m, Life-Star Fraser of Reynold Weekes Primary continued her family’s winning tradition, taking top honours in 7:57.7. She was followed by Trinity Breedy of Hindsbury Primary (8:00.8), national badminton junior champion Yasmyn Eastmond of Happyvale Montessori (8:04.2), Sinnai Watson of Charles F. Broome Memorial (8:05.4), and Livia Forde of Christ Church Girls’ Primary (8:06.3).

 

Meanwhile, the Class 2 Boys’ 1600m event saw Czar Broomes-Webster of West Terrace Primary dominate the field in a winning time of 6:37.9 seconds. Ethan Hawtin of Providence finished second in 7:00.3, and Asher Collett of St Winifred’s followed in third with 7:09.1. Rounding out the top five were Shadairo Stewart of Eagle Hall Primary 7:12.2 and Judah Sylvester of St Gabriel’s 7:12.8.
