Barbadian motorists are once again digging deeper into their pockets as fuel prices climb, despite global oil markets heading in the opposite direction.
The Ministry of Energy’s announcement Thursday that gasoline prices would increase by six cents to $3.95 per litre and diesel by seven cents to $3.40 has left drivers questioning why local prices don’t reflect international trends.
The irony wasn’t lost on Merloe Reid.
“What is lost on me is the fact that in the world market, the price of oil is down,” the retired Barbadian said, echoing the frustration of other drivers across the island.
While Barbadians received some relief on their electricity bills this month – with the fuel clause adjustment dropping to its lowest level in nearly four years – motorists are feeling the pinch at the pump as diesel also climbed seven cents to $3.40 per litre.
“How come we are not seeing that decrease in the world market being reflected here?” Reid asked. “Why is it that the price is always going down and then back up when it has remained steadily low on the world market?”
