Govt’s Road Repair Programme to receive support

The Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW) has invested in six JCB pothole patching trucks to support its road repair programme.

Deputy Prime Minister Santia Bradshaw, who has responsibility for that ministry, made the announcement on Thursday as she delivered remarks at a reception to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the J.C. Bamford Excavators Limited (JCB) brand. It was hosted by British High Commissioner Simon Mustard in collaboration with Inchcape Barbados.

Bradshaw told her audience: “The ministry.. . has recently placed an order for six JCB pothole patching trucks to support our road repair programme, as well as six JCB Flail Head Cutters to assist with the debushing along our highways. I do not have to tell you how excited, as minister, I am, and I know by your applause you are equally looking forward to seeing that, certainly in the new year.”

“I’m assured . . . that I should be in a position to have them, hopefully by the end of this year, with a view to being able to have their teams train up our teams in MTW. In early January, when we are out of the hurricane season, it is our expectation that we will be able to start to do some . . . meaningful pothole patching across the country as we continue to do our road infrastructure programme.”

In congratulating JCB for its outstanding milestone, she noted that the company had become one of the world’s most respected manufacturers of construction and agricultural equipment. She added that it was known and trusted in more than 150 countries and represented quality, innovation, and reliability.

Bradshaw said her ministry’s partnership with JCB has stood very strong over the last four decades, with the first pieces of equipment being purchased in early 1981.

“Over the decades, JCB machines have proven to be reliable, . . .durable and indispensable to the ministry’s operations, whether it’s from road construction to national disaster.”

“Many of these machines were also. . . at the forefront of the cleanup and the recovery efforts following Hurricane Beryl, . . . demonstrating once again, their durability and their excellent performance in times of national need,” the deputy prime minister stated.

During her brief remarks, Minister of Energy and Business, Senator Lisa Cummins, also commended JCB, stressing that Barbados “is a great place to set up business”. She stated that Barbados was happy JCB was here “doing incredible things”.

Senator Cummins said just as JCB has grown since its humble beginnings in 1945, she eagerly looks forward to seeing a Barbadian company excel across the globe and celebrating a similar anniversary.

Regional Head of JCB Caribbean, Erik Montero, said the company would continue innovating to improve the lives of citizens of Barbados. High Commissioner Mustard expressed confidence that JCB would continue to drive progress. (BGIS)
