Graydon Sealy students, staff ready for move to former Ursuline Convent site

Students and staff of Graydon Sealy Secondary School say they are prepared and optimistic about the school’s upcoming relocation.

Principal Shyrelle Howard-Gittens told Barbados TODAY on Friday that after some initial hesitation, both students and teachers have warmed to the idea of moving to the former Ursuline Convent campus.

“Initially, when the students heard about the move, some of them were a little apprehensive because they didn’t know anything about it,” she explained. “But some actually went to Collymore Rock to investigate. Now, most of the children are pleased, and the teachers are pleased too.”

Howard-Gittens said the new location offers greater potential for growth.

“I think the new site will give us more opportunities to expand some of the programmes we currently offer at Graydon Sealy,” she said. “It bodes well not only for our existing students but also for those who will be joining us in the future.”

The relocation follows the closure of the Ursuline Convent in 2023. It was first announced in the March Budget by Minister in the Ministry of Finance Ryan Straughn, who revealed that Graydon Sealy’s current Paddock Road compound will be repurposed as a full training facility for the Vocational Training Board.

In June, Prime Minister Mia Mottley confirmed that construction at the Collymore Rock site would begin shortly.

While senior students won’t be part of the transition, many expressed support for the move.

“There will be better opportunities for students coming in,” said Stacia Mascoll.

Christina Browne added, “It’s a new space, a new environment for students to feel more confident in themselves. And it’s a fresh start.”

For Shamiya Burgess, the change is tinged with emotion.

“It’s a bittersweet feeling. [Paddock Road] is where I first came. It’s sad that we have to move, but times are changing, and it’s time for new beginnings.” (SZB)
