Barbadians Justin Greaves and Hayley Matthews have made history by becoming the first two Barbadian cricketers to win the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Player of the Month awards in the same month.
Greaves was named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month, while West Indies women’s captain Matthews claimed the women’s award following their outstanding performances last month.
Matthews led the West Indies to a 3-0 series sweep over Ireland, scoring two match-winning centuries. The award is her fourth ICC Women’s Player of the Month honour.
“I am thrilled to win the ICC Player of the Month award once again. It is just as special as the previous ones, and I hope it inspires me to keep raising my standards, contributing to the West Indies, and winning more such awards in the future,” Matthews said.
Greaves secured his first ICC Men’s Player of the Month award after starring with both bat and ball in the Test series against Sri Lanka in Antigua and Pakistan in Trinidad. He was named Player of the Series in both contests.
“I had a memorable month playing at home, and to have contributed with both bat and ball against Sri Lanka and Pakistan has been particularly special for me,” Greaves said.
“Having impactful performances in Test cricket is always something I will cherish, especially when they come in front of our home fans.”
Both players were shortlisted alongside two other nominees for their respective awards.
Greaves, 32, who attended Combermere School and represents Empire Club, is currently playing for Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League.
Matthews, a former Harrison College student and Pickwick Club player, recently returned to Barbados after playing in The Hundred in England. She will captain the Barbados Tridents in the upcoming Women’s Caribbean Premier League at Kensington Oval next month.
