Greaves continues record breaking form

Arielle Greaves set the track ablaze this morning in the opening heat of the 1km time trial qualification round, producing another record-breaking performance at the Junior Pan American Track Cycling Championships in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico.

Greaves clocked an impressive time of 1:12.011 to establish a new national junior record, eclipsing the previous mark of 1:15.601 which she set in Lima, Peru in 2025.

The finals are scheduled for this afternoon, with Greaves set to compete in Heat 5 as she continues her quest for a medal.

It follows her stellar performance on Wednesday, where she set a new national record in the opening round of the flying 200m, before being eliminated at the quarter final stage.

Speaking after her ride, an upbeat and confident Greaves shared her excitement about the performance.

“The ride felt really good. I went out there and executed my race plan under the guidance of Elisha Greene, who is the team’s mechanic but also a mentor to me.

“Qualifying with the fourth fastest time is a great way to start my medal campaign, and to top it off with another national record gives me a huge confidence boost. I’m excited for this evening’s final and I’m looking forward to competing and giving it my best shot. I’m going for the victory,” Greaves said.

Team manager Deidre Hinkson expressed immense pride in Greaves’ latest achievement.

“Arielle is a strong young athlete with the ability to go very far in the sport. Despite Barbados not having a facility for track cycling training, she has still managed to produce her best performances to date. We are extremely thankful that she has been able to train in Trinidad and Tobago in preparation for this competition.

“Looking ahead to the finals, we are placing no pressure on her. We simply want her to give it her all and leave everything out on the track. Once she gives her best effort, we will be satisfied, and a medal would simply be the icing on the cake,” Hinkson said. (DH)
