Haitian national remanded over thefts

Haitian national Juninho Fils Bien-Aimé has been remanded to custody until September 14 after admitting to stealing cash, clothing and barbering equipment from two of his countrymen.

The 35-year-old, who is listed as having no fixed address, appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Douglas Frederick and pleaded guilty to entering Oger Clerger’s home as a trespasser and stealing $1 000 from him.

He also confessed to breaking into Alain Prevelus’ home and stealing two barbering machines valued at $200, two shirts worth $200, two pairs of pants valued at $140, and $2 000 cash belonging to Prevelus.

The offences occurred on August 12.

Prosecutor Sergeant Victoria Leacock told the court that Prevelus and Clerger were roommates and, on that date, both left for work, leaving their respective bedrooms secured and locked. Later that evening, Clerger returned home to find his lock damaged, his belongings scattered, and $1 000 missing.

Prevelus returned home less than an hour later and, as his phone connected to the wireless internet connection, received images from cameras in the home showing a man inside the home just after noon that day. Both Prevelus and Clerger said they had not given anyone permission to enter the residence. Prevelus found his room ransacked, with several items and cash missing.

Bien-Aimé said: “I would like to go out to get a job so I could pay them back.”

But Frederick replied: “These are your countrymen, so why would you do this to people from your own country?”

Telling the No. 1 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court that he had spent the money on food and friends, Bien-Aimé said he had been in Barbados for eight years but was now living on the streets after an argument with his girlfriend.

“I came to visit but stayed to work to help my family,” he said.

Noting his lack of address and the need for the Immigration Department to provide information on his status, the magistrate remanded him into custody until September 14.
