High hopes for WI rebound

West Indies will look to pick themselves off the floor and hit back at Bangladesh when they face off in the T20 International Series. The first showdown of the three-match series is today (8 a.m. Barbados Time) at the Bir Shrestha Shahid Flight Lieutenant Motiur Rahman Stadium in the city of Chattogram.

The other matches will be at the same venue and at the same time on Wednesday and Friday. The Windies were floored 2-1 by the Tigers in the One-Day Internationals and skipper Shai Hope has challenged his teammates to “evolve with the cricket” as they seek to rebound from the blows they suffered in the ODIs and have an impact in the shortest format.

This series is part of preparations for the next edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next February. West Indies will also want to salvage a year that has been indifferent. They were beaten 3-0 in England; beat Ireland 1-0 after two wash-outs; were hammered 5-0 by Australia; and  succumbed 2-1 to Pakistan in Fort Lauderdale. More recently came the previously unthinkable – the shocking 2-1 defeat at the hands of Nepal in the United Arab Emirates.

Hope spoke at the pre-series media conference after he and Liton Das unveiled the trophy at a stately public event at an historic train station in the bustling city. The skipper acknowledged the challenges of the previous series but was keen to focus on the present.
