Historian unpacks Carlisle Bay’s role in British wealth

The historical impact of Carlisle Bay as both a financial juggernaut and a tactical military stronghold for the British Empire was laid bare at the latest instalment of the Standpipe Stories: The Bay Street Edition lecture series.

The heritage event, organised by The University of the West Indies in association with the We Gatherin’ Secretariat, was held at the Oceanic Hub on Bay Street on Saturday evening. It brought together a panel of distinguished local historians, including Dr Henderson Carter, Claudette Levi-Farnum, and Fredrick Alleyne.

Delivering the foundational address, maritime historian Dr Jeff Ward detailed how Barbados’ precise geographical location and the natural infrastructure of Carlisle Bay generated unprecedented wealth for the British Crown.

It was explained that Carlisle Bay functioned as the critical “maritime urban interface” to where “the indentured and enslaved came in and where sugar, rum, and molasses left” for global markets.

Dr Ward said the modest 2.5 and 4.5 per cent taxes levied on colonial trade carried an astronomical global weight.

“It is our taxes from that commerce which principally paid the interest on the entire British national debt,” he noted. “The volume of wealth coming out of here was absolutely staggering. We need to understand why British sugar mattered.”

The unique combination of geology and geography ultimately secured the country’s status as Great Britain’s premier economic anchor and forward-operating military base in the region.

“Without naval superiority, the French and the Spanish will take our islands and the commerce they produce,” Dr Ward stated, paraphrasing the 18th-century British Admiral Vernon to illustrate the high stakes of Caribbean dominance.

Furthermore, Dr Ward illuminated how the physical layout of the bay was fundamentally reshaped over the centuries by severe weather.

He detailed how successive hurricanes ripped massive coral structures from the sea floor to create permanent landmarks like Pelican Island.
