A Class Battery Bayley’s Primary came away victorious in the third annual six-a-side softball tournament held by the National Sports Council in a lead-up to the popular Herman Griffith Competition.
Sponsored by City of Bridgetown Co-Operative Credit Union Limited and rebranded as the “Festival Six” for the first time, there were plenty of shots and massive six-hitting at the Police Training facility on Tuesday.
Standout player Jadeja Holder walked away with the most valuable player award when he led Bayley’s through the playoff rounds and into the finals by scoring 99 runs and taking six wickets in his three games played on the day.
Bayley’s defeated Grazettes Primary by 78 runs in the quarterfinals and Selah Primary in the semifinals by 93 runs to cruise into the finals. Their opponents, Jordans Supermarket Good Shepherd Primary, had a tougher time reaching the championship game as they beat St Cyprian’s Boys by 22 runs and Charles F Broome Primary by 45 runs.
The final game on the day played out in similar fashion to the others as Bayley’s batted first and put a massive total on the board, scoring 116 for the loss of one wicket with Holder scoring 59 and Aiden Blades reaching 35. Holder returned with the ball to skittle out the Good Shepherd team for 18, taking two wickets in the first over earning himself the most wickets in the tournament with 16.
Jasper King of St Gabriels scored the most runs for the tournament with 444 which included two centuries, 130 and 111 during the preliminary games at Blenheim. The best female player award went to Niasha Patterson of Shirley Chisholm Primary.
Next up for these future stars will be the Herman Griffith hard ball competition which is scheduled to begin on October 21 at various playing fields across the island.
