Akeal Hosein had a superb allround performance as Trinbago Knight Riders romped to their fifth Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title. They beat Guyana Amazon Warriors by three wickets in a low-scoring, thrilling final on Sunday night ant the Guyana National Stadium.
The triumph was the fifth for Trinidad in the 13 years of competition. It was another heartbreaking defeat for the Amazon Warriors, who lost in the final for a seventh time.
“This is amazing. Special thanks for all the fans who supported us. It was a total team effort to win. This was a tough season but we pulled through and we deserved it,” skipper Nicholas Pooran said.
The visitors used a sterling bowling effort, with Saurabh Netravalkar (3-25) and Hosein (2-26), to limit the home side to 130-8 in their 20 overs in front a full house.
After his side suffered a slight collapse in the run chase, which saw them reduced to 116-7, Hosein smashed an unbeaten 16 from seven balls to lift them to 133-7 with two overs to spare. He won the Player of the Match award.
When Hosein hit the winning runs her received an embrace from his mentor Kieron Pollard, who was named the Player of the Tournament. (PS)
