Hunte warned, ordered to pay compensation

A Bridgetown magistrate has warned a woman who admitted that she has already been charged three times for the same complainant, to “see her and don’t see her.”

“You need to behave yourself. When you see her coming on the same side of the street, cross over to the next side. People will look at you and don’t like you.

That doesn’t mean you can beat them. And here you are boldly saying you have been charged for her three times, which means this is very serious,” Magistrate Manila Renee told 26-year-old Jalisa Alisa Latoya Hunte of Bibby’s Lane, St Michael, as she stood in the dock of the No. 2 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court.

Hunte had pleaded guilty to unlawfully assaulting Janelle King, occasioning her actual bodily harm, on August 2.

Court prosecutor Sergeant Reginald Blackman told the court that the two had known each other for several years, and in 2020, there was a verbal altercation between them due to a social media post.

On the mentioned date, King was on Prescod Boulevard during Foreday Mornin’ jump when she saw the accused from a distance with a group of persons.

Moments later, she felt a tug and looked back to see Hunte holding onto her clothing. The accused then began cuffing King about her head and mouth, causing her to fall. A male bystander intervened, and police were called. The accused voluntarily turned herself in at the police station.

In her account, Hunte stated, “I didn’t grab her from behind. I walked up to her and gave her a couple cuffs.”

King, who was present in the court, said that the issue between them arose from gossip. “She is basing it on hearsay. She never heard those things come out of my mouth.”

Magistrate Renee ordered Hunte to pay King $1 500 in compensation by January 31. Failure to do so will result in her having to spend one week in prison. She was also placed on a six-month bond to keep the peace. If breached, she will have to pay a $1 500 fine within two weeks or face a one-week jail term.
