ICBL bee boosts literacy with youthful flair

A buzz of excitement filled the room as the Insurance Corporation of Barbados Limited (ICBL) launched its sixth National Junior Spelling Bee — a showcase not just of spelling prowess, but of the power of literacy to transform young lives.

 

Minister of Educational Transformation Chad Blackman commended ICBL and its partners for their ongoing investment in education.

 

He underscored the importance of literacy as the foundation of national development, noting, “We must ensure that the education system we’ve inherited now evolves into one that prepares us for the future — anchored by our own ideals and vision, and focused on competitiveness.”

 

Blackman further noted that the initiative aligns closely with the ministry’s new literacy transformation programme.

 

“Every part of the country must now see literacy and reading as something in the interest of all of us,” he said.

 

He also challenged more companies to follow ICBL’s lead, adding that “the private sector must continue to play its part in building a literate and confident generation”.

 

Last year’s winner, Amayah Chase, formerly of West Terrace Primary School, made history as the first public school student to win the national title.

 

Reflecting on her experience, she said: “Winning this competition has been a dream come true. The prizes were not only many, but of such high quality. My trip to London was unforgettable, I even met my great-grandparents for the first time.”

 

Her former English teacher, Nakesha Hutson, praised the competition for its far-reaching impact.

 

“Spelling competitions such as these promote literacy, encourage academic excellence, and develop a love for language,” she said.

 

ICBL Chief Executive Officer Goulbourne Alleyne expressed gratitude to sponsors and partners who have joined in support of the initiative, including new silver sponsor GO! Insect Repellent. Brand Developer Kristen Austin shared that the company is “eager to support education and other resources that will go toward the development of our youth”.

 

Republic Bank, one of the long-standing partners, reaffirmed its commitment through its “Power to Make a Difference” programme. Marketing Officer – Communications, Sharon Howell, noted: “Education is the single most powerful tool to shape a brighter future. Every child deserves the opportunity to unlock their full potential.”

 

Since its inception, the ICBL Spelling Bee has attracted participation from both public and private schools across the island, with students competing for top honours and valuable prizes. This year’s edition promises to be no different, with organisers hinting at new elements to make the event even more engaging.

 

As anticipation builds, educators and sponsors alike continue to stress the value of such platforms as the ICBL Spelling Bee in inspiring academic excellence.
