A Brittons Hill man has admitted to unlawfully inflicting serious bodily harm in 2023 but denied that he intended to cause grievous injury.
Peter Luther Jordan, of Reece Road, Brittons Hill, St Michael, pleaded guilty to unlawfully and maliciously inflicting serious bodily harm on Adrian Maynard on August 30, 2023.
He denied causing serious bodily harm to Maynard with intent to do grievous harm or to maim, disfigure, or disable him.
In the complainant’s statement read into evidence by Principal State Counsel Joyann Catwell, the No. 3A Supreme Court heard that Maynard and another man were walking along Warners Road in Brittons Hill around 6 p.m., when he saw two youths approaching, both with their hands behind their backs as though concealing something. He recognised one of them as Jordan.
“Without any warning, Peter Jordan moved his hands from behind his back, and I realised then that he had rocks in his hand. He started pelting these rocks at me, and then the other person who was with him joined him and also started pelting rocks at me,” the account read.
Maynard added that he had “a clear and unobstructed view” as they were standing in the area of the streetlight about 12 feet away.
“I started to run, but one of these rocks struck me to the right side of my head in the area of my temple. I felt immediate pain and fell to the ground. Peter Jordan and the man who was with him approached me while I was lying on the ground in a daze, and I immediately felt blows about my entire body. I looked up and saw that he was kicking me in my ribs, so I asked him, ‘You gine kill me?’… I felt immense pain in my ribs, my head and groin as this beating continued for close to ten minutes before they decided to stop and walk away.”
Maynard was later taken to the Accident and Emergency Department and admitted for treatment.
The statement of Police Constable Alicia Padmore indicated that, after speaking to his attorney, Jordan told police that he and another man were standing next to his house when they saw “Nurse man”.
In his oral statement, Jordan said: “I kicked him off his feet and start to beat him… Nurse man giving my mother alcohol although he know she just come from rehab.”
Counsel Latisha Springer appeared as a friend of the court for the accused while Catwell and State Counsel Treann Knight prosecuted in the No. 3A Supreme Court.
Justice Anthony Blackman ordered a pre-sentencing report and adjourned the case until May 26.
