IT WAS A DAY of continued celebration across the island as several schools marked the success of students in the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination after the results were announced on Monday.
A feeling of happiness and tears of joy swept over Juneau Howell of Blackman & Gollop Primary School as she found out she passed for Queen’s College, the same school her father attended.
One of ten early sitters in the island, she sat the exam at ten years old, scoring 95 in English, 97 in Mathematics and a C in composition, with a total converted score of 236.28.
Juneau told the MIDWEEK NATION yesterday the exam was manageable, deeming both the math and English as the easy exams.
Preparation for the exam saw Juneau practising several past papers with her mother, going through essays and comprehension. She even had to sacrifice the thing she loved most, cheerleading, while understanding she had to remain focused for the exam.
“I had to give up cheerleading, which is an activity I usually do after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I felt bad and I wasn’t happy about it, but I knew I had to give it up to study for the examination,” she said.
She is looking forward to joining the cheerleading team at her new school in September.
Jamal Howell went through several emotions when he found out his daughter would be heading to his alma mater in September, something he had hoped for.
He recalled how he and Juneau’s mother assisted in her preparation for the exam by running through questions in maths and English and helping out with whatever issues were presented.
Howell shared his hopes for his daughter as she prepares for the next phase of her education.
“I just wish her all the best. She’s young and her future is full of so much, and I just want her to excel at everything that she puts her mind to,” he proudly said. (AJ)
