Junior Monarch competition scheduled for sweet showdown

Twenty-four young semi-finalists selected their numbers on Thursday morning at the media launch for the upcoming Scotiabank Junior Monarch at Scotiabank in Warrens, St Michael, all of whom are ready to compete for that coveted crown.

With over 40 entries received—more than half in the traditional calypso category and 16 in the soca category—the field was eventually narrowed to 24 semi-finalists and one reserve.

Kevin Moore, a producer at the National Cultural Foundation (NCF), declared that this year’s competition is not to be missed, “as our young calypsonians gear up to showcase their talents while preserving a rich part of our culture”.

He highlighted that the competitors, between the ages of seven and 18, include seven newcomers from 17 schools, including two private schools. Moore said they have been consistently getting ready for their first public performance of the season at the first tent scheduled for Saturday at the Queen’s Park Steel Shed, at 6 p.m.

“The offerings this year are of a high calibre and promise to continue to improve on the high quality presented previously,” said Moore. “They worked hard through the rehearsals, and intense mentorship sessions have begun.”

Moore also mentioned that the Scotiabank Junior Monarch developmental programme would provide each participant with training and coaching in stage presence, vocal techniques, basic music business, and financial planning.

That mentorship will be ongoing with veterans like Red Plastic Bag, TC, Ian Webster, Mac Fingall, Dawn-Lisa Callender-Smith, and Lisa Howell, who will all “share their insights and advice for the artists’ growth through the mentorship process.”

Furthermore, this year, a group of four young music educators, performers, and entertainment management experts, led by Paul Forde, will also be part of a team of external coordinators to support these young entertainers.

NCF’s Chief Cultural Officer Andrea Wells, who also spoke at the launch, added that the Foundation was especially proud of the efforts to reach students who may not have access to in-school music teams: “Through our junior mentors and the remote support system, we are ensuring that no talent is left behind. Whether you come with a full band or just a dream, this competition is open to you.”

The second and final Junior tent will be held Saturday, June 21, at Queen’s Park Steel Shed at 6 p.m. Following the Junior Tents, the contestants will face the judges in the semifinal at 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 29 at the Marquee Tent at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.

There, the finalists will be chosen to vie for the crown at the Garfield Sobers Complex on Saturday, July 19.
