Cricket West Indies (CWI) will honour Barbadian fast bowler Kemar Roach for reaching the milestone of 300 Test wickets during the innings break of the fifth One-Day International between the West Indies and New Zealand at Kensington Oval on Tuesday.
Roach became only the fifth West Indian and second Barbadian to claim 300 Test wickets when he reached the landmark during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Antigua.
The on-field presentation will be held in partnership with the Government of Barbados and the Barbados Cricket Association.
CWI President Dr The Hon. Kishore Shallow praised Roach’s contribution to West Indies cricket.
“For the better part of two decades, Kemar has represented the West Indies with distinction, displaying extraordinary skill, heart and determination every time he has worn the maroon cap. He has been an outstanding ambassador for Caribbean cricket, and an inspiration to generations of young fast bowlers.
“I am personally heartened to witness a player of this generation whose unwavering commitment and exceptional contributions have earned him a rightful place among the legends of our game. On behalf of Cricket West Indies, I once again extend heartfelt congratulations to Kemar on this remarkable achievement. It is a richly deserved honour, and one that reflects the profound impact he has made on West Indies cricket.”
With free admission already announced for the match in honour of the late National Hero Sir Garfield Sobers, CWI is encouraging Barbadians to remain in their seats during the innings interval to salute one of the region’s modern greats.
Since making his Test debut in 2009, Roach has taken 300 wickets at an average of 28.83, including 12 five-wicket hauls and one 10-wicket match haul. He joins an elite list of West Indies bowlers comprising Courtney Walsh (519), Sir Curtly Ambrose (405), Malcolm Marshall (376) and Lance Gibbs (305). (PR)
