Kite prep takes flight as Barbadians ease into Easter weekend

While beaches and parks remained relatively quiet, signs of Easter weekend anticipation were evident across the island on Friday, with several Barbadians spotted stocking up on kites and materials for the traditional holiday pastime.

Though the usual hustle and bustle was missing from many of the popular outdoor spots, including beaches, kite culture was still alive and well on Good Friday.

At a small village shop tucked away at the bottom of Government Hill, a handful of children were seen assembling and fine-tuning their colourful creations, eager to have them soaring high in the days ahead.

A store assistant told Barbados TODAY that while foot traffic remained light, she expected a surge in last-minute shoppers leading up to Easter Monday, a trend that has become increasingly common in recent years.

Meanwhile, over at the National Botanical Gardens, a few families took advantage of the breezy weather to kick off their kite flying early. Although the turnout was modest, many of those gathered said they were hopeful that the space would be buzzing with activity by Sunday and Monday.

“It’s still early,” one kite flyer noted. “By Sunday and Monday, this place usually picks up. That’s when the real action starts.”
