Living wage ‘next step’

General Secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) Toni Moore says their next major battle will be to push beyond the recently established minimum wage towards securing a true living wage for Barbadian workers.

Delivering the feature address during a ceremony to lay a 15-year time capsule at the union’s Solidarity House, headquarters, she paused at several points as she reflected on the struggles of workers and the unfinished business of the labour movement.

“We have done well so far to establish a minimum wage, but the fight for a true living wage . . . . This capsule will hold that unfinished task,” she said, her voice quivering as she spoke of the responsibility to future generations.

The ceremony, marking the BWU’s 85th anniversary, saw union leaders, members and invited guests gather for what Moore described as “an act of faith” in the future of workers and the organisation itself.
