After swiping at a man with a cutlass and ending up damaging his car, Rodney Ricardo Matthew was placed on a six-month bond to keep the peace and ordered to pay damages.
Appearing in the No. 1 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court, the 50-year-old, of Bynoe Road, Worthing View, Christ Church, pleaded guilty to unlawfully assaulting Torian Brathwaite and damaging his motor car last Friday.
The court heard that Matthew had had an issue with the complainant for a number of years. On the day, Brathwaite had just pulled out of his driveway when two males, one of whom was the accused’s nephew, shouted him. He reversed and began chatting with them. During the conversation, he heard the two men shout, looked around and saw Matthew heading towards his car while armed with a cutlass. The accused swiped the cutlass at Brathwaite, who was still in the driver’s seat, and he ducked. The cutlass struck the car door. The other men grabbed the accused, Brathwaite drove away, and the matter was reported to the police.
Placing him on the bond, Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes told Matthew that if he was convicted of another offence within the six-month period, he would have to pay $750 immediately or spend 60 days in prison.
Matthew was also required to pay $1 154 for the damages, which included chop marks to the front right door and to the rubber and panel inside the door.
Failure to pay the fines by March 26 will result in him serving 60 days in Dodds Prison.
