After pleading guilty to wounding his grandmother and assaulting police officers, Namari Jumar Murray has been remanded to the Psychiatric Hospital for three weeks
The 24 year old of Scotts Terrace, Grazettes, St Michael, pleaded guilty to unlawfully and maliciously wounding Gale Brathwaite; assaulting Constable Sherlon Spooner, occasioning him actual bodily harm; resisting PC Spooner; and assaulting PC Shaquille Nicholls in the execution of their duties on August 13.
Prosecutor Sergeant Victoria Leacock informed the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court No. 1 that Brathwaite was at home with the accused when he began to exhibit “strange behaviour”. Murray, who has been diagnosed with intermittent explosive behaviour, threw his tablet at her.
Brathwaite asked why he was behaving that way and dared him to hit her. She then returned to watching television. Murray walked over, bent to see whether she was sleeping, and then punched her repeatedly in the face, head and upper body. Brathwaite shouted to her neighbour to call the police.
The two officers responded and arrested Murray, but while they were escorting him to the police vehicle, he head-butted PC Spooner in the mouth and assaulted PC Nicholls. Murray was taken to the District ‘A’ Police Station and seen by a police medical officer, who referred him to the Psychiatric Hospital. On August 16, he was released back into police custody and deemed sound of mind to be interviewed.
Addressing the court, Murray admitted that he had been a psychiatric outpatient and that he was on medication, but it had run out.
Acting Chief Magistrate Douglas Frederick remanded him into the custody of the Psychiatric Hospital and adjourned the case until September 9.
