Man slain in highway gun attack, second killing in 24 hours

A man was shot and killed during an attack on the ABC Highway at St Barnabas, St Michael — less than 24 hours after another fatal altercation in Christ Church, bringing the island’s murder toll for the year to 38.

The latest killing occurred during a shooting incident at the highway’s pedestrian crossing at the highway’s junction with Mount Friendship Road around 10:45 am, police said. The man was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital by ambulance after receiving multiple gunshot wounds, but later died from his injuries.

On Sunday afternoon, a man died after an altercation at Agave Drive, Graeme Hall, Christ Church.

When Barbados TODAY visited the scene just after 11 a.m., several police officers and members of the Barbados Defence Force were securing the area where the highway bisects the road leading to St Barnabas Anglican Church.

In an update to reporters, acting Inspector Ryan Brathwaite said detectives at District ‘A’ Police Station had launched a full investigation.

He said: “Our initial investigations have shown that there was an altercation involving some persons, and as a result, a number of gunshots were heard. A man sustained several injuries as a result of those gunshots. He was transported by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.”

The deceased was later identified as 20-year-old Shaquan Renaldo Chandler-Wray, of Mount Friendship, St Michael.

Inspector Brathwaite appealed to anyone who may have been in the area at the time and witnessed this incident or may have any information to contact the CrimeStoppers hotline at 1-800-8477, Police Emergency at 211, or the police at District ‘A’ at 430-7242 or 430-7246. (SB)
