Met Office: Stop tampering with unmanned surface vehicles

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) is advising members of the public, especially fishermen and other sea users, to refrain from removing or tampering with its unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) in the sea.

The USVs, which have clear markings painted in yellow and black and meteorological instruments on board, are launched by the BMS from time to time in the sea to monitor weather and marine conditions within Barbados’ exclusive economic zone, to support its weather and marine predictions.

Mariners are therefore urged not to intercept or interfere with the vessels at any time because doing so can cause damage to the USV and affect data collection.

Any issues about the USVs should be reported to the department by calling 535-0022, or emailing meteorological.services@barbados.gov.bb.
