Minister Blackman’s message for Teachers’ Professional Day

Today, on Teachers’ Professional Day, I extend heartfelt gratitude and profound appreciation to every educator across Barbados. You are not merely teachers of subjects; you are architects of possibility, cultivators of purpose and nation-builders shaping the destiny of our people every single day.

At this defining moment in our nation’s history, education stands at the centre of Barbados’ transformation agenda. Today’s classrooms are shaping the leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, creators and global citizens of tomorrow. This is why the work you do is not ordinary work – it is sacred work.

I have said repeatedly that Barbados must become the best education system in the world within the next six years. This is not merely an aspiration; it is a national mission. That mission cannot be achieved without courageous, reflective, innovative and deeply committed educators willing to reimagine what teaching and learning can become.

Our country needs teachers now more than ever before. We need educators who inspire curiosity in a generation surrounded by information yet searching for wisdom. We need teachers who nurture resilience, compassion, creativity, character and critical thinking. We also need educators who prepare our students to compete confidently on the global stage while remaining grounded in Barbadian excellence, identity, and values.

Education is no longer only about preparing students for examinations. It is about preparing them for life, leadership, innovation and service in a rapidly changing world.

In order to continue to be the excellent practitioners of your craft you must be given the opportunity for rest and rejuvenation. This was made a reality after a hiatus of 12 years when I had the pleasure as the Minister of Education Transformation, with our partners in the union present, to announce the reinstatement of Long Leave for teachers effective April 1, 2026.

As a result, teachers can once again, after the first 15 years, and every 5 years thereafter, benefit from this provision which has been protected by this government; a fitting testimony of our understanding of the tremendous investment and sacrifice made by you, our educators, to our national development.

As educators, I encourage you to remain reflective practitioners. Continue asking yourselves: “How can I reach the child who feels unseen? How can I make learning more meaningful? How can I ignite purpose and possibility within every student entrusted to my care?”

Transformation requires courage – courage to embrace innovation, challenge outdated systems, adapt to new technologies and pedagogies, and believe that every child, regardless of circumstance, possesses greatness within them. The Barbados we envision will be built in our schools through collaboration, excellence, accountability, empathy, and bold leadership. It will be built by educators who understand that they are shaping not only students, but the future trajectory of an entire nation.

As minister of education transformation, I reaffirm this government’s commitment to supporting our educators, modernising our education system and ensuring that teaching remains one of the most respected and valued professions in Barbados. Together, let us build an education system that is globally respected, technologically advanced, student-centred, values-driven and future-ready. Together, let us raise a generation of confident global citizens equipped not only to navigate the world, but to transform it.

To every teacher who sacrifices quietly, encourages tirelessly and serves faithfully – thank you. Your impact extends far beyond what you may ever see.

Happy Teachers’ Professional Day, Barbados.
