Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Charles Griffith has hailed Kraigg Brathwaite’s achievement of playing 100 Test matches for the West Indies and a proud moment for Barbados and the region.
In a statement issued today, the Minister said Brathwaite now stands as only the tenth West Indian—and third Barbadian—to achieve the feat, placing him among the legends of the game.
He praised the West Indies captain for his leadership, consistency, and determination, calling his career a shining example to young people across the region.
Below is the full statement:
Today, I join Barbadians and West Indians across the world in saluting Kraigg Brathwaithe as he reaches this extraordinary milestone of 100 Test matches for the West Indies; a feat accomplished by only a select few in the long and proud history of this, our game.
Kraigg, you now stand as only the tenth West Indian, and only the third Barbadian, to achieve this feat, placing you in the company of Barbadian and West Indian legends; giants of our game like Sir Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes, whose names are forever etched into the soul of our national and regional identity.
While the numbers involved—how many tests and how many runs—will take the limelight, what must not be lost is the understanding of what those numbers represent. Consistency. Grit. Leadership. Discipline. These are the values that are synonymous with the name Kraigg Brathwaithe, and values that have defined your career. They are indeed the same values we seek to instill in our young people as we chart this path of national development, through sports yes, but through all aspects of our society.
Your journey, from a young boy in Black Rock to captaining the West Indies and now reaching this moment, stands as a true example of what is possible when talent meets tenacity, and when ambition is guided by purpose. As a captain and as a player, you have had the hopes of our region placed on your shoulders, and you have never shied away from the task at hand, but have always stood up to be counted.
Kraigg, your legacy is already secure, but what makes it most powerful, is that it is still being written. Every time you step onto the field, you give our children another reason to believe that excellence is within their reach. You have reminded us that greatness can come from quiet determination, and that true leadership is as much measured with on the field performances, as it is with the character shown along the way.
On behalf of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, on behalf of the Government and people of Barbados, and on behalf of a grateful Caribbean region, I thank you for your continued service, and for the high standards of excellence you continue to set.
May your 100th test match be a moment of celebration, not only for you and your family, but for every young cricketer who dreams of one day walking in your footsteps.
Congratulations, Kraigg. I pray the road ahead will be filled with even more milestones, even more memories, and even more moments that make you and this region proud.
