Morality must triumph over money, says Opposition Leader

Opposition leader Ralph Thorne has declared that the Democratic Labour Party’s (DLP) campaign in the St James North by-election is not merely a contest for votes, but a moral crusade to rescue the nation’s spirit from what he called a deep political and ethical void.

Speaking recently at the launch of a second constituency campaign office, located in Rock Dundo, he told party faithful and members of the clergy that the DLP was guided by a principle that places morality over money.

“This campaign is not about material power or political wealth. It is about spirit, morality, and restoring a sense of decency to our national life,” Thorne said.

“Over the last 24 hours, people have read our message, they’ve heard our motto, and they have come forward to donate – not because we asked, but because they believe that morality must triumph over money.”

The Rock Dundo launch followed the opening of the party’s first office in Mount Standfast, and Thorne described the expansion as a sign of divine favour rather than financial muscle. He expressed gratitude to the community member who donated the space for the Rock Dundo office, describing her as “a person of absolutely beauteous spirit”.

“This is not just a political office, it is a symbol of the kind of campaign we are running – built on love, generosity, and shared purpose,” he said.

The Opposition Leader said that while the DLP has been starved of public funding since its 2018 defeat, the strength of its campaign lies in the commitment of its supporters and the righteousness of its message.

“We are an impoverished party. We’ve been in opposition for seven years, and they’ve denied us the subvention, taking our rightful portion unto themselves. But we do not live by that might. We live by the spirit of God,” he declared.

Thorne sought to contrast the DLP’s “message of moral clarity” with what he portrayed as the ruling Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) reliance on money and state power.

“The opponent believes that might is right, that the mere possession of power justifies everything they do. But I want to say – power can be unjust.”

Yesterday’s [Tuesday] event featured prayers from several members of the clergy, including Pastor David Durant, whose invocation reportedly moved candidate Felicia Dujon to tears.

“There is something very powerful happening in this campaign,” Thorne said.

“It’s more than politics. I feel we are connecting with people spiritually and morally. This feels like a mission.”

He reiterated that the campaign was being sustained by a growing number of Barbadians who see the DLP as the moral alternative to the Government.

“This is not only about restoring a constituency. This is about rescuing the soul of this country. And it begins right here, in St James North.”

Thorne closed the event with a rallying call for supporters to stay the course, vowing that the DLP would continue to campaign with humility and integrity.

“If there is any victory to be had, it will be in how we conduct ourselves in pursuing the people’s business – with humility, faith, and honour. That is the victory we are seeking.”
