National Advisory Council ‘useless, hopeless’

Democratic Labour Party candidate for St Philip North Simon Clarke is asking a number of questions of the ruling Barbados Labour Party concerning the increasing levels of criminal activity in Barbados.

Speaking in support of his colleague Felicia Dujon, who is contesting the St James North constituency, Clarke within the context of rising crime questioned the status of the National Advisory Council on Citizen Security.

He was speaking during a meeting in Rock Dundo, St James Sunday night.

“The Prime Minister told this country that the council is immediately tasked with providing a comprehensive approach to combating crime and restoring stability,” Clarke said.

“That council is useless and hopeless,” he said.

During his remarks Clarke also supported the call for antigang legislation to be introduced given the failure of the Government to control the violence in Barbados.

“Let us detect who is a gang leader…who is a gang member. Who performs an act as a condition for a member in a gang…let’s detect who intimidates persons, let us detect who gains benefit for himself, and I am including females because the Barbados Labour Party will tell you if there are any female gang leaders in Barbados,” noted Clarke.

The attorney also made reference to the reported robbery of security guards who were depositing money in Broad Street, The City earlier on Sunday morning.

“Violent crime has created an unprecedented level of discomfort in our communities. Crime is at an all-time high. That is not the Barbados we are living in… Crime is striking at the heart of our communities and the Democratic Labour Party and [Dujon] are advocating for safer communities and see the safety of the community as paramount,” said Clarke while endorsing Dujon as a woman of solutions, credible, dedicated and hardworking.

Speaking also towards local concerns for the constituency, Clarke said its residents must feel safe when they access the beaches, travel on public transport and go shopping. (JS)
