As part of his vision for the sport, new Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) chief executive officer (CEO) Paul Skinner will be seeking to enhance the current feeder system where girls and boys can move from the youth level to become competitive, world-class cricketers.
“As a local board, we have our part to play in being a feeder system for West Indies cricket. We have to be in a constant state of evolution and improvement to be competitive on the global stage,” Skinner said after assuming his new BCA role on Tuesday.
“Other countries internationally are performing at a high level and producing world-class cricketers regularly and the BCA must ensure that we produce quality professionals, male and female, that are consistently competitive in all formats of the game,” he added.
Skinner also stressed the importance of partnerships, with the BCA membership and the various clubs, to the development and growth of cricket in Barbados.
“In any business, forging meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships is absolutely essential . . . . We have a large number of clubs and large membership with a wide range of expertise that I would like to tap into. We also have a duty to be of more service to them and look at more creative ways to engage and encourage everyone to play a greater part in the growth of cricket in Barbados,” he added.
Skinner, who takes over from Dr Roland Toppin, who recently retired from the post he held since 2018, recently served as general manager with the Trinidad Knight Riders franchise in the Caribbean Premier League.
The cricket administrator, who has over 20 years of regional and international experience in various sporting bodies, including Cricket West Indies and the Indian Premier League (IPL), said he was pleased to join the association.
“I am honoured to be here at the BCA . . . and I am extremely proud to be of service to Barbados and Barbados cricket. The BCA has had a long and illustrious history in cricket and cricket administration, and I look forward to complementing that history and continuing to enhance the strong foundation that has been set,” he said.
With vast experience in the areas of franchise teams, event management, covering commercial financial, operational and sponsorship responsibilities, Skinner said he planned to utilise these skills in his new position at the BCA.
“Corporate Barbados and the private sector are a large and important segment in this plan and their support will be critical to ensuring the viability and sustainability of our plans for the sport,” Skinner said.
