New British envoy to focus on climate, security, and development

Two decades after beginning his diplomatic career in the Caribbean, Simon Mustard has returned to the region as the United Kingdom’s new High Commissioner to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.

He presented his credentials to President Dame Sandra Mason at State House on Friday, marking the official start of his tenure.

As High Commissioner, Mustard will focus on advancing key priorities for the UK’s engagement in the region, including security cooperation, economic growth, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

“I am thrilled to return to the Caribbean, a region that holds a special place in my diplomatic life,” said the new British High Commissioner who started his diplomatic career in Belize. “I look forward to getting to know the people of Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, and to working closely with regional governments to address shared challenges and opportunities.”

The veteran diplomat previously held postings in Central America, Washington DC, the Middle East, Africa, and London, and served as British High Commissioner to both Sierra Leone and Malawi.

He holds a degree in International Relations from the University of Aberdeen.
