New DLP general secretary aims to unify party

The Democratic Labour Party continues to hold out an olive branch to former members in an effort to get them to return to the fold.

Following the church service Sunday on the final day of the 71st Annual Conference at George Street, St Michael, newly elected General Secretary Corey Greenidge said he aimed to unify the party for the good of Barbadians.

“Previous members, new members, we want to be a party that understands that everyone has a part to play. So certainly, part of our thrust would definitely be to encourage all of our members to participate in the process. We’re not only now offering it, but we’ve always offered an olive branch. Again, it is no secret the challenges the party went through in 2024, but for my part, I believe that we are in a position where we can say, ‘listen, it is time to come home’. It is time for our members to consolidate and get behind serving the Barbadian people; to put aside our differences and be prepared to serve the Barbadian people,” he said.

It is two years since the infamous “locked out” incident during the church service of the 69th conference, when some then-members were not allowed onto the compound due to alleged disruptive behaviour.

The DLP has lost the last three consecutive General Elections 30-0 to the Barbados Labour Party, dating back to 2018.

Greenidge said, while the party had been struggling with its membership of late, his resolve was to go into the community and restore people’s confidence in the organisation.

“Most of the work, as you would imagine, is internal. [It will be] a lot of bringing together of the branches and starting to reorganise where we need to, in particular having membership drives. We know it’s not a secret that a lot of our membership has fallen off over the years, so we’re going to be concentrating heavily on being in the community,” he said.

The general secretary said too many people were living in fear of speaking their minds and it was the responsibility of the DLP to hear what people had to say. (CA)
