New Yorkers lift 2025 Sir Garry U-19 cricket title

New York Tri-State Youth Development exacted revenge upon The Hills Cricket Academy, claiming a five-wicket win in a rematch of last year’s final of the 2025 Sir Garfield Sobers International Under-19 Cricket Tournament on Thursday at Kensington Oval.

The new victors, skippered by Ekansh Rastogi, dethroned the defending champions by chasing the Australian academy’s 157 for eight in 40 overs, reaching 158 for five in 38.1 overs.

Player of the match Emmanuel Lewis hit an unbeaten 54 off 83 balls to seal the deal for NY Tri-State.

Requiring 158 for victory, NY Tri-State slipped early to nine for two after opening bowlers Finn Bailey and captain Thomas Macdonald quickly removed the opening pair of wicketkeeper-opener Shiloh Adams and Danish Dinesh for one.

Bailey had Adams caught by Naden Cooray for seven, before Macdonald dismissed Dinesh for one, caught by John James.

However, the Guyanese pair of Lewis and Dhanesh Persaud (35) added 84 runs for the fifth wicket to calm the New Yorkers’ nerves, after Ajay Prithiviraj (26) rebuilt the innings with Lewis through a vital 33-run partnership which lifted the champions from 39 for three in 8.3 overs to 72 for four in 19.2 overs.

Earlier, the tournament’s leading wicket-taker off-spinner Jayden Dowlin, son of former West Indies and Guyanese cricketer Travis Dowlin, took three for 27 in five overs to halt any lower-order charge from the Australians who started well.

Hills Academy openers Hamilton Seoung (40) and Beau Goodall (31) shared an opening stand worth 71 to lay a solid platform which the middle order failed to capitalise upon.

The Australians quickly fell from 71 for one in 17.3 overs, to 88 for four in 22.1 overs, before James (17) and Josh McDowell (19) did some repair work to 122 for five in 31.2 overs.

In the end, their modest 157 was not enough as NY Tri-State won the 2024 rematch to rule the popular ‘Sir Garry’ tournament.

Local teams Christ Church Foundation School and National Sports Council Under-17 were knocked out at the semi-final stage. (RW)
