‘No egg shortage’ for Christmas

There will be no shortage of eggs this Christmas season as the poultry industry has already taken steps to boost supplies through regional imports, says president of the Barbados Egg and Poultry Producers’ Association (BEPPA) Stephen Layne.

Speaking to the media at the Barbados Agricultural Society’s annual general meeting at Accra Beach Hotel on Saturday, he revealed that a 40-foot container of eggs will soon arrive from Trinidad and Tobago to meet seasonal demand.

Layne said the move follows a similar import two months ago to supplement the local stock and ensure they can meet the needs of households and the tourism industry during the busy festive period.

“We’re importing another 40-foot container of eggs from Trinidad and Tobago to make sure there’s enough supply for Christmas. We did a similar import two months ago,” he said. “We prefer to source regionally, so it’s a good opportunity to strengthen inter-regional trade.”
