On World Tourism Day, BHTA chairman urges vision, sustainability, and equity

Today (September 27, 2025), Barbados proudly joins the international community in celebrating World Tourism Day 2025 under the theme ‘Tourism and Sustainable Transformation’. This year’s theme calls on us to recognise tourism not only as a driver of economic activity but as a transformative force that shapes societies, uplifts communities, and secures a more sustainable future.

For Barbados, tourism is far more than an industry. It is the heartbeat of our economy and the foundation of countless livelihoods. Tourism fuels foreign exchange earnings, sustains thousands of jobs, empowers entrepreneurs, and provides opportunities for Barbadians of every generation. Beyond the economic contributions, tourism tells the story of who we are as a people. It reflects our culture, our creativity and our enduring warmth as hosts to the world.

Yet, if we are to unlock tourism’s true transformative potential, growth alone is not enough. We must ensure that the development of our industry is guided by vision, discipline, and sustainability. This requires:

Good governance and strategic planning: Clear policies and priority setting that align tourism development with Barbados’ long-term national goals.
Environmental protection: Safeguarding our reefs, beaches, coastlines, and green spaces, which are not just assets but our competitive advantage.
Human capital investment: Equipping Barbadians with the skills, training, and career pathways to thrive in a global tourism environment.
Resilience building: Preparing for the realities of climate change, global economic shocks, and unforeseen disruptions to ensure the industry’s stability.
Inclusivity and equity: Ensuring that the benefits of tourism extend beyond hotels and attractions, reaching communities and creating opportunities for all Barbadians.

As Chairman of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA), I wish to reaffirm the commitment of our membership to advancing these principles. The BHTA represents stakeholders across the full spectrum of accommodation providers, restaurants, attractions, and tourism services. We are united in our resolve to ensure that tourism in Barbados evolves in a way that is innovative, competitive, inclusive, and sustainable.

The challenges before us are real, rising global costs, skills shortages, and climate pressures, but they are not insurmountable. With partnership between Government, the private sector, and communities, we can chart a course for transformation that ensures Barbados remains one of the world’s most desirable and resilient destinations.

On this World Tourism Day, let us recommit ourselves to this mission. Let us embrace tourism not just as a sector of economic activity, but as a force for national transformation, a sector that uplifts our people, strengthens our communities, protects our environment, and secures prosperity for future generations.

Happy World Tourism Day 2025.

BHTA Chairman, Javon Griffith
