Parents urged to use discretion as schools reopen today

Government schools and nurseries reopen today, but the Ministry of Educational Transformation is urging parents to use their discretion when deciding whether it is safe for their children to travel, given lingering flood risks across parts of the island.

In a statement issued Monday evening, the Ministry said the decision to resume classes on Tuesday followed further consultation with the Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS). However, it acknowledged that some communities remain vulnerable after Sunday’s severe flooding and may face additional showers.

“We remain cognizant of the fact that some areas of Barbados may experience further rainfall, and some areas remain more vulnerable than others as a result of recent flooding,” the Ministry said. “We ask parents and guardians to use their discretion when deciding if it is safe or practical to allow your children to venture to school under the current circumstances.”

Parents are encouraged to stay in contact with schools so principals and teachers are aware of any challenges and can help students keep up with assignments if they are unable to attend.

The Ministry said it looks forward to welcoming students and teachers back to the classroom and wished a swift recovery for those most affected by the weekend’s weather. Schools were dismissed early on Monday after the BMS upgraded a flood watch to a flood warning.
