PM meets with cricket icon

West Indies cricket legend Sir Curtly Ambrose was the honoured guest of Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley at a special meeting yesterday morning at Ilaro Court

The fast bowling icon is in Barbados as part of the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons franchise team for the ongoing Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

As part of the meeting, the Prime Minister discussed with Sir Curtly the present challenges in West Indies cricket and how the legends can contribute to the development of young players around the region.

This was Prime Minister Mottley’s first meeting with Sir Curtly, during which they exchanged views on how to enhance the heritage of West Indies cricket, as well as the shared responsibility to preserve and build on that heritage.

“It was a very special honour to meet with Prime Minister Mottley and discuss the topic of cricket in general and our West Indies cricket, in particular. It is clear she is very passionate about the game and wants to see it return to former glory and grow in the region,” Sir Curtly said. “I’m someone who is always committed to West Indies cricket and I’m happy to make a contribution anywhere and in any way I can.”

Sir Curtly is hailed as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time. His career record is outstanding with 405 wickets in 98 Test matches and 225 wickets in 176 One-Day Internationals in 12 years at the highest level.

During the meeting, Sir Curtly presented the Prime Minister with a signed souvenir West Indies miniature bat. They also discussed practical steps to strengthen youth engagement in cricket, and to invest in structures that can return West Indies cricket to its place among the top teams in the world.

Both the Prime Minister and Sir Curtly noted the importance of regional collaboration in safeguarding the sport’s legacy while charting a path toward future success. Sir Curtly is currently the bowling mentor for Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in the CPL. They will face the Barbados Royals from 7 p.m. at Kensington Oval
