Polls open in St James North

Early morning voters braved drizzles of rain to cast their ballot in the St James North by-election today.

Along the West Coast, when the doors were opened at the St James Parish Church voting centre in Holetown, a line was already forming.

Most voters said it was a simple and quick process.

“Any day that you have an opportunity to vote is a good day,” one man told Nation News.

“I believe it is a privilege to vote. A lot of people in other parts of the world don’t have this kind of privilege,” he added.

Later in the morning, the rain came, but people continued to queue, some voting before going to work.

While people were observed at People’s Worship Centre at Road View, St Peter and St Alban’s Anglican Church, all was quiet at St Alban’s Primary School with a lone policeman standing on the steps.

People in the St James North constituency are voting for a new parliamentary representative after Edmund Hinkson announced his retirement. The ruling Barbados Labour Party sent forward Chad Blackman, Felicia Dujon is the candidate for the opposition Democratic Labour Party, with Independent Steffanie Williams and Alex Mitchell, president of the Bajan Free Party, comprising the choices for electors.
