Barbados’ first Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Andrea Blackett, has called on Barbadians to protect and nurture the island’s sporting legacy for generations to come.
Speaking at the 40th annual National Sports Council Awards Ceremony, held last Sunday night at the Wyndham Grand Barbados, Sam Lord’s Castle, Blackett reflected on the pride of bringing home Barbados’s first Commonwealth gold medal in the 400 metres hurdles at the 1998 Games in Kuala Lumpur.
“Creating a legacy, our journey through sports. It is truly a privilege not just as an athlete but as a proud daughter of Barbados to come from a nation whose sporting journey has shaped not only our international image, but local pride,” Blackett said.
“This year in September marks 27 years since I won Barbados’ first Commonwealth gold medal.”
The Olympian and Commonwealth champion reminded the audience that “sport in Barbados is more than competition, it is identity, it is community, and it is legacy”.
