The Barbados Police Service says there is counterfeit United States Currency in circulation and is advising embers of the public and business community to be vigilant, particularly during the remainder of the Crop Over Season.
Commercial activity should not only increase as the Sweetest Summer Festival comes to a climax, but there will also be back-to-school shopping and the upcoming Yuletide Season.
People accepting cash should carefully examine all banknotes before completing transactions. Business owners, cashiers, market vendors, taxi operators and anyone handing cash are reminded to familiarise themselves with the security features and remain alert for notes that appear unusual in texture, colour, print quality or security markings.
The public is further advised to:
Carefully inspect all banknotes received during transactions.
If you suspect a note is counterfeit, do not attempt to pass it on or return it to circulation.
Preserve the note, limit handling where possible and immediately contact the nearest police station.
Members of the public are reminded that knowingly possessing, uttering, putting off or obtaining counterfeit currency are criminal offences.
Anyone with information relating to counterfeit currency or is aware of persons involved in its production or distribution are asked to contact the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1800-8477, Police Emergency at 211, the Criminal Investigations Department at 430-7189 or 430-7190 or the nearest Police Station.
