Purple breaks 40-year drought to win Springer Memorial interhouse title

Purple finally returned to the top, capturing their first interhouse sports title in four decades as Springer Memorial staged a thrilling meet at the Usain Bolt Complex.

When the dust settled on the Dasani Barbados Secondary Schools Athletic Championships, Purple stood clear with 408 points, edging Yellow into second on 380, while Blue claimed third with 361.50. Green finished fourth on 340 points, and Red rounded out the field with 263.50.

Purple’s Kanedra Morgan was the senior Victrix Ludorum, having amassed 67 points, while Shataniya Straker-Ifill of Red won the junior equivalent.

Bragging rights for the title of the “fastest girl” went to Destinee Bruce, who clocked a personal best time of 12.95 seconds, to win the Under 20 Girls’ 100m.

Speaking to Barbados TODAY after the race, the Yellow House competitor was elated with her performance.

“Well, going into the race, I was a bit worried about how my start would go because my start at times it can be good and at times it can be bad as well, so I was a bit scared, a bit nervous, but surprisingly the start was good, and I know that my second half of the race is the better half. So I knew that since my start was good, that the race was good altogether.”

“I’m happy with the time because it is a big PB. In terms of BSSAC, I am a hurdler and I want to go to CARIFTA, so my goals are to run under 14.3 seconds.”

Principal Sonja Goodridge was pleased with both the level of competition at the event and the atmosphere. “We are pretty well organised and I think everyone had a part to play; they’ve done what they’re supposed to do, and we are quite pleased as well with the turnout. We have a lot of children here and a lot of others supporting.”

According to Goodridge, Springer Memorial has won 19 BSSAC girls’ titles, including 14 straight at one stage. She’s optimistic about mounting a challenge for title number 20 this year.

“Definitely the school to watch for 20 this year. I can never be sure, but I don’t put anything past us. We have as our motto ‘steadfast and motivated, soaring to success’,” she added.

“We’re Springer Eagles and we will continue to soar. So whether we win or not, we’re going to go out there and do our best.”

Meanwhile, at Deighton Griffith, a large crowd was on hand for the school’s rescheduled meet.

The 200m in all divisions saw a number of closely contested races and a few dominant performances, with one of the latter coming in the Under 20 Boys’ event, which was won by Roshae Broome of Blue House.

“I went into the race with my mind set to establish a new record in the Under 20 Boys’ 200m, but I am not sure if I got it; I have to see when the time is official. Earlier in the morning I competed in the 100m and 400m and later I will contest both relays,” said Broome, who has big targets for the remainder of the season.

“I really want good times in the one and two hundred metre events and to qualify for CARIFTA.”

Broome’s mother, Aisha Graham, was on hand for the race and was elated with his performance.

“I know the pressure is on, but I am one of his biggest cheerleaders, so I have to let him know I am here, so my presence will be felt. It is hard and tiring, but at the end of the day, I love it,” Graham said.

Meanwhile, Coleridge and Parry held their sports at the Usain Bolt Complex yesterday.

Set A (Yellow) topped the standings on 906 points, ahead of Set B (Red) on 872, with Set C (Blue) finishing third on 681. Set F (Purple) ended fourth on 598, Set D (Green) fifth with 584, while Set E (Orange) was sixth on 399 points.
