Push to reduce suspensions

A new approach to handling student suspensions is being implemented in Barbados, as the Ministry of Educational Transformation moves to reduce the number of children sent home and to tighten oversight of those being punished for delinquent behaviour.

Special effort will also be made to ensure students return to school when suspensions are completed, and to reduce the time away from the classroom.

All this was revealed yesterday as debate began in the House of Assembly on the Appropriation Bill, 2026, containing the Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure for the coming financial year.

Deputy Chief Education Officer Julia Beckles said these were part of the Ministry’s plan to ensure that students placed on suspension are not academically disadvantaged and are properly monitored during their time away from regular classes.
