The Reunion is back for its fourth year and the charity event promises a range of icons and emerging talents for an evening of musical revellery.
Dubbed “The Ultimate Flag Party” the event, scheduled for July 25, also serves as the main fund-raising event for Mikey Mercer’s charity Team Mikey.
Describing the party as the perfect merger of then and now, Mercer announced the event during a launch ceremony at Pelican House on the Harbour Road on Friday evening.
Speaking before a gathering of sponsors, musical peers, charity members and Crop Over ambassadors, Mikey reflected on the ethos of the event, which he said was designed to promote local acts and present a pure essence of a Barbadian fête.
“For me, most importantly, it’s a 100 per cent Barbadian acts. We have a tremendous amount of talent on this rock called Barbados and we as a people have to rebuild our self-love for Barbados and how we love Barbados.
“We are enough. I don’t have anything against foreign acts, but we are enough. We need to invest in us a bit more and it has become my personal ambition to prove to these people that Barbados is more than enough.”
Most importantly for him was the support that the event provides in raising funds for the Team Mikey charity, which aids families and communities. Mikey said that the increased number of calls for aid underscored how crucial the Reunion was as a fund-raising event.
“There’s a whole range of stuff that we do . . . such as scholarships which focus on children leaving primary school and heading into secondary school. We take care of their entire first year, so we give them school uniforms, school shoes, games shoes, pay their fees, give them a laptop, bag – everything – just to ease that burden because that is a fairly big transition,” he said.
The Reunion will be held at Kensington Oval and patrons will be provided shuttle entry from the environs into the venue. In keeping with the theme of the flag party, patrons are encouraged to represent with flags of their choosing. ( JRN)
