Emerging musician and former Lester Vaughan School student Nico Jack has capped his secondary school journey on a high note, earning the coveted Principal’s Award at the school’s annual Speech Day on Monday.
Currently a Barbados Community College (BCC) music student, Jack reflected on a transformative journey that began in the quiet isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges of reintegrating into school life, he credits a strong support system for his success.
“It feels great,” Jack said. “Coming from being more quiet and having to integrate myself back into school… it’s been a tough ride, but it has been interesting to work and achieve so much with my friends, my family, and the teachers.”
During his time at Lester Vaughan, Jack balanced a diverse range of subjects, including Physics, English, and Mathematics, alongside his musical pursuits. Now focusing on the piano at BCC, he views his current studies as the beginning of a new chapter.
While he admits he is still mapping out his long-term path, his immediate goals are clear: becoming a professional musician and an entrepreneur.
“Music has always been my passion to express myself,” he said. “Playing piano will help me with that.”
Beyond the keyboard, the award winner is looking to challenge himself intellectually, expressing a desire to dive back into strategic hobbies like chess and Warri to keep his mind sharp.
The ceremony also featured a solo performance by fellow student Jamali Ward, adding to the celebration of youth excellence and talent. For Jack, the recognition serves as a powerful validation of his efforts.
“It felt great because all my hard work is now paying off. To be appreciated feels great, honestly.”
Also in the winners’ row were Jahrad Clarke-Richards, who won the Deputy Principal’s Prize for demonstrating remarkable personal development, and the Most Outstanding Student in External Examinations, Larrisa Alleyne-Gay.
