After pleading guilty to a burglary charge, Leon Omar Rock was handed an 18-month prison stint and ordered to receive treatment in kicking a drug habit.
The 39-year-old Block C Princess Royal Avenue, Pine, St Michael resident admitted to entering the home of Angela Mayers as a trespasser on June 10 and stealing a weed whacker, two identification cards and a Public Workers Cooperative Credit Union card with a total value of $1 875.
Court prosecutor Sergeant Randolph Boyce told the No.1 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court that Mayers had secured and left her home around 8:30 a.m., but upon her return later, she found her bedroom ransacked and her handbag missing. A further search revealed that the whacker had been taken. A knife had been left inside the home. After the matter was reported to the police, investigations led to the accused.
The court also heard that Rock, was already on bail, and had failed to turn up, leading to his surety having to forfeit some of the bail money.
Rock, whose 29 previous convictions all fell under the Theft Act, told the court that he had begun smoking crack cocaine earlier this year. He asked for help in breaking the addiction.
Magistrate Bernadeth John ordered that he receive drug counselling while at Dodds Prison.
