Public Relations Officer of the Barbados Rugby Football Union Kathryn Daniel expects a creditable showing from the men’s seven’s team at the upcoming CAC Championships in the Dominican Republic.
“What we have here is a squad of mostly very experienced players who have been around for several years, but are still young.
“If I’m not mistaken Malique Broomes might be one of the younger ones.
Jaden Howell and Simon John, I believe, are cousins. But without giving too much away to the opposing teams, we have some very talented players here,” Daniel surmised.
She said the team possesses the skillset to excel, during what is expected to be a competitive championship.
“Chris is extremely quick and agile, and Jeremy is one of these extremely fit people. These guys, most of them have been playing together for several years, so I think we should do extremely well at the CAC games,” she added.
Barbados recently enjoyed success in 15’s action and Daniel hopes the CAC team can carry this form into the shorter format of the game.
“In the longer format, we unfaired as Bajans would say, St Vincent 68-0 a few weeks ago. Then we also got the better of the Green Machine out of Guyana. That was only the second time in several years that we would have defeated Guyana, so I would say that the guys have been working extra hard to up their game.”
The Bajan team was, however, defeated by higher ranked Cayman Islands recently, but Daniel says the local side put up a good fight, which leads her to expect great things at the CAC level, when the games get underway on July 24.
The Barbados Rugby 7’s team:
