Older Barbadians are being urged to take the ongoing extreme heat seriously, as high temperatures and dry conditions continue to increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Met officials in a recent weather bulletin urged the public to guard against heat exhaustion, dehydration, heat stroke and fainting, with forecasters saying hot conditions are expected to persist across Barbados through September and October.
Given these conditions, Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) President Marilyn Rice-Bowen is urging older people and their families to take precautions.
“For many of us, Barbados’ heat is nothing new. We have lived with hot days, strong sunshine and sometimes some uncomfortable nights. But what we are experiencing now is different,” she told Barbados TODAY.
Rice-Bowen said temperatures around 32°C to 33°C, coupled with apparent temperatures approaching 45°C, could place considerable strain on the body, particularly among older people.
“As we age, our bodies may not respond to heat as efficiently as they once did. Older persons can become dehydrated more quickly and may be at greater risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dizziness and fainting,” she said.
BARP is advising older people to drink water regularly, even when they are not thirsty, avoid prolonged outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and wear loose, light-coloured clothing and a wide-brimmed hat or use an umbrella when outdoors.
Rice-Bowen also encouraged people to keep homes cool and well ventilated, use fans or air conditioning when necessary, and take cool showers or baths.
She urged families, neighbours and friends to check regularly on older people, particularly those living alone.
“A simple phone call can make a real difference,” she said.
Rice-Bowen also warned people not to ignore signs of heat-related illness.
“Most importantly, we should recognise some of the warning signs such as confusion, weakness, dizziness, fainting, severe headaches, and seek medical assistance quickly,” she said.
Earlier this month President of the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners (BAMP) Dr Lynda Williams revealed that doctors are seeing more elderly patients getting sick at home because of the heat.
