Shamar Springer to play first match since last November

Shamar Springer has been given a boost to his cricket career as he prepares to play for Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Global Super League T20 tournament. The tall athletic allrounder has been out of action since last November and is making his comeback today when the home team bowls off against Rangpur Riders at 7 p.m.

The 27-year-old Barbadian, known for his accuracy and clever changes of pace as well as his middle-order hitting, was sidelined a stress fracture of the left shin. After a focused rehabilitation programme, Springer has been cleared for competitive action and was officially named in GAW squad for the GSL. He has only played one match since then which was a T20 for Carlton in the local competition.

“This is my first game back since last November,” Springer said yesterday. He spoke to NATIONSPORTS after the training session from the Guyana National Stadium at Providence in Georgetown.

“I’ve worked hard to get back and I’m grateful for the faith shown by the Warriors. I’m feeling strong, I’ve been bowling in training, and I can’t wait to play and get going again. The time away I kept the faith that I would make it back on the field,” Springer said.

“It was challenging, as I thought I would have been able to feature in the first-class season earlier this year, but was not to be. So, I’m happy to be back on the field and I’m thankful to Guyana for this opportunity”.

Springer made his T20 International debut last October on the tour of Sri Lanka and is hoping to make a return to the team with a bid to play in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup next February.
