Shop Talk forum brings cancer conversations to communities

Efforts to empower individuals, particularly men, with vital information about cancer continue to gain momentum, with community dialogue, proactive health checks, and stress management at the forefront of the conversation.

These themes were central on Saturday at Shop Talk 9: Let’s Talk About Support for Cancer Patients, held at the Speightstown Resource Centre. The forum is part of the Shop Talk series, a public outreach initiative by The Conquering Men of Cancer Support Services in partnership with the Massy Foundation. Its goal is to foster open conversations around cancer, wellness, and preventative care.

Member of Cancer Support Services Ian Carrington explained that the series was created to take these critical conversations directly into communities across Barbados.

“The intention of the series was for us to go out into the community. We are based in the St Michael area, but so far we have taken Shop Talk to St Philip, St George, St Peter, and we will continue to go to all parts of the island because we want to have people talking,” he told attendees.

Carrington said individuals should also recognise personal stress triggers and the effect they can have on overall well-being.

“It’s very important to have your regular checks and manage your stress,” he said, drawing from personal experience. “I would sometimes go to the office on a Saturday morning and do two or three hours of work. For me, that reduced my stress because I was able to clear a backlog. But for my wife, that would have increased hers. Everyone has different stressors, we all need to identify what they are.”

Encouraging the public to take greater responsibility for their health, Carrington underscored the importance of keeping abreast of medical advances.

“Stay informed. Become aware of the things that might affect your health. Become aware of advances in medical science, so that something that might have been in vogue 10 years ago is not necessarily in vogue now. Because you read and research, you know, okay, there is now a PET scan as opposed to a CAT scan, and maybe I actually need to be thinking along those lines,” he said.

The Shop Talk series continues its outreach across the island as part of a broader effort to break down barriers to men’s health, reduce stigma, and promote early detection through education and support. (SB)
